Automist is a patented fire protection system for the kitchen, where most domestic fires start. The first product in a new class of near-invisible, easy-to-retrofit fire suppression devices, Automist is fitted between the tap and the sink. It connects to existing plumbing via a pump which when activated creates a fine water mist. This is an effective suppressant on both electrical and chip pan fires. Detection is based on industry standard heat detectors, effectively eliminating the nuisance alarms that are so common with smoke detectors.
Paul developed the initial concept for Automist in his final year at the Royal College of Art with two colleagues, winning numerous awards and then setting up a company to develop it further. The photo shown here is the current design which was developed from concept through to mass production. Automist has now received two rounds of investment, has passed all relevant fire standards and is available for sale.
In 2009 Automist won the James Dyson Award, one of the world's most prestigious international design competitions. James Dyson said:
“This simple but clever device should become a permanent safety feature in the home. Smoke alarms are essential part of modern life but have remained fundamentally unchanged for forty years. Automist not only detects a fire but can put it out as well.”
